Did your father ever
write you a note?
I remember the day like it was last
month. I needed a
new pair of shoes. So off I was sent to Allan’s Shoe Store, St Albans.
Mum wrote a note for
the shop owner, and away I went.
No money changed
hands. No
price was ever mentioned. I didn’t even need
to say much. It just happened.
Mr Allan told me where to sit and in a short
period of time I was on my way with that new leather and
rubber school shoes smell rising from my
feet.
Can you smell that new shoes smell right
now? You know as well
as I do that was more than 10 years ago! I mean, I rode my
bike several
kilometres down to the shop, obtained those shoes and remember
all the details from
where I sat to how many shoes the salesman tried on to what
the shop
owner’s hair looked like. I can tell you all the
details.
Why can I remember
all of that? It wasn’t the shoes, I’ll tell you now. It was
the note. The power
and the mystery of the note!
Has your father
ever written you a note? If so what type of note was it? Was it
a something to buy
at the shops? Was it a thank you note? My Father never
wrote me a note. The
only note associated with me I remember Dad having was the
paper he wrote the
notes on for the
speech he read out
at my 21st party. I
can remember those
encouraging words like it was yesterday
too.
We all know there
is no power in the paper or even the words on the paper. But I
can assure you that
my life was powered by the encouragement that my Father
read out to the
audience at speech time at my 21st party.
Have you ever written your daughter
a note?
It may be the
single most influential thing you do for your daughter. At
the father daughter
event we will talk for a short time about this
topic.
I’ll let you in on a small moment
that demonstrates
the importance of this idea. Just the other day, I was
feeling rotten with
the flu, one of my daughters was going to bed a little late. She
knew that it was too
late for talking, and therefore held in her hand, where
I could read it, a
note she had pulled out from her notes
collection.
The note was hand written, it was
from me, to her, and it
simply said something simple like, “Dear (Name of
Child),
I hope you get well soon, thank
you or your efforts
to help at home…”
She remembered getting the note,
like it was
yesterday…which it wasn’t. I couldn’t even remember which month I
gave it to
her!
